Feeling unwell in Roman Leicester? The surgeon is here to help!

It’s 1,900 years ago and you’re not feeling your best. Perhaps you have a painful tooth, a troublesome wound, or a mysterious illness. Luckily, help is at hand — the Roman surgeon has arrived!

Roman medicine was surprisingly advanced for its time. Drawing on knowledge from across the vast Roman Empire, surgeons used a fascinating range of instruments and treatments to care for their patients. From scalpels and forceps to herbal remedies and bandages, Roman medical practitioners combined practical skill with traditional knowledge in their efforts to heal the sick.

During this special event at Jewry Wall Museum, visitors will have the chance to step back into Roman Britain and discover how medical care worked nearly two millennia ago. Meet the surgeon, explore the tools of the trade, and learn about the remedies and techniques used to treat everything from everyday ailments to battlefield injuries.

Was Roman surgery as frightening as it sounds? What medicines did the Romans trust? And how successful were these ancient treatments?

Come along and find out how the Romans dealt with medical maladies — and see whether you would have survived a visit to the surgeon!
