Explore the exhibition and get hands-on with genuine Roman artefacts

Roman artefacts handling session (Key Stage 2 & 3)

Our Roman artefacts handling session will give students the chance to handle and examine Roman finds from Leicester and further afield. Students will experience how artefacts help us understand life in a Roman town and how archaeologists and historians interpret this evidence.

Key stage 2 pupils will make their own soap carving inspired by the artefacts on display

Key stage 3 students will sketch one of the artefacts, making annotations on colour, material, measurements, and other features. Students will learn how archaeological illustration is used in the field to aid the documentation of finds.

This session lasts for approximately 1 hour and is run by a member of the Learning team.

Add this workshop to your visit from £4.50 per pupil (this is in addition to the ticket price).

Learning outcomes

Pupils will:

  • learn what life was like in Roman Leicester for different people, including food and clothing, bathing and social activities, housing and other buildings in the Roman town.
  • learn how the Baths played a central part in the life of the town and what people did there.
  • learn how we find out about life in Roman Leicester, using archaeological evidence from excavations and artefacts.
  • be able to put this into practice by handling and examining artefacts for themselves.
  • learn about multiculturalism in Roman Leicester, where residents came from and where they travelled to in the Roman Empire.
